Here We Go!
Introducing another item from my Sex Pistols collection.
This time, I am looking at the 12-inch single
Submission (EXPORT 1)
released by Chaos Records.

This copy is the clear blue version, one of several clear coloured vinyl editions.
🧷 Basic details
・Title: Submission
・Artist: Sex Pistols
・Format: 12-inch single (45RPM)
・Release year: 1984
・Label / catalogue number: Chaos Records / EXPORT 1
・Sleeve: Picture sleeve
🧷 Track listing
・Side A: Submission
・Side B: Anarchy In The U.K.
Both sides feature Dave Goodman demo versions.
The audio on this EXPORT 1 pressing is said to be closer to Dave Goodman’s original tapes, with little later remixing or processing, which gives it a rough and raw feel.
🧷 Pressing and variation details
✔️ Matrix numbers (runout etchings)
・Side A: WE’VE LOST OUR VIRGIN — ITY. ORLAKE LYN-15049 CARTEL+IT+A PENTHOUSE
・Side B: NO SHAREHOLDERS TO DICTATE THE TERMS. ORLAKE CARTEL+IT+B PENTHOUSE
✔️ Sleeve

It is that familiar room shot that many fans will recognise.

The band members look very young here.
The catalogue number “EXPORT 1” is printed at the top right on the back cover.
✔️ Labels
The labels are white with black text, and show CARTEL 1TA / CARTEL 1TB on Side A and Side B.
There is also a version with EXPORT 1TA / EXPORT 1TB on the labels instead.

🧷 Collector’s notes
✔️ About the record
This record exists with two catalogue number variations: “CARTEL 1T” and “EXPORT 1”.
Both were released with the same sleeve.
- CARTEL 1T: for distribution within the UK
- EXPORT 1: for export outside the UK
This copy has an “EXPORT 1” sleeve, but the labels are “CARTEL 1T”.
There also seems to be a fully matched version with “EXPORT 1” on the labels as well.
The vinyl itself comes in seven colours: red, green, blue, yellow, pink, clear, and white, with a total pressing of around 12,000 copies across all versions.
It also seems that only the pink vinyl had a second pressing.
Given the catalogue number variations and the different vinyl colours, it seems quite possible that each individual version exists in quantities of only around 500 copies.
There is also said to be a rare one-sided promo with the catalogue number “CARTEL 1”, without the “T”.
For collectors trying to complete this release, that promo is likely to be the hardest one to find.
✔️ Recording
These recordings were made and mixed between 13 and 30 July 1976 using Dave Goodman’s own 4-track recorder.
The backing tracks were recorded at the Sex Pistols’ rehearsal studio in Denmark Street, London, then transferred to 8-track at Riverside Studio, Chiswick, London W.4, where overdubs and vocals were added.
✔️ Matrix numbers
The matrix messages appear to contain sarcastic references to Richard Branson, who was head of Virgin Records at the time.
- Side A: “WE’VE LOST OUR VIRGIN — ITY”
- Side B: “NO SHAREHOLDERS TO DICTATE THE TERMS”
🔜 Coming up next
Next time, I will be looking at two more Submission 7-inch singles in pink and yellow.
Thanks for reading.
