🧷 Collector’s Notes

✔️ Obi strip

Including this Universal pressing, three analogue LPs have been released in Japan with an obi strip reproducing the Nippon Columbia design — the so-called “Kuro bukkake-obi.” The original Columbia pressing, the 30th Anniversary edition, and now this one.

Nippon Columbia pressing (left)

  • The first domestic LP release in Japan, 1977 — 11 tracks
  • The obi front carries the Nippon Columbia and centenary logos
  • The reverse features a singles advertisement and a quote from Camus

30th Anniversary edition (centre)

  • Configured to match the UK original (SPOTS 001 / V 2086), with a poster and a 7-inch of Submission included
  • Released domestically with an original obi, Japanese liner notes, lyrics and translations
  • Released by EMI Music Japan
  • The obi reverse shares only the band logo with the Columbia original; everything else — album description, track listing — is different

Universal limited edition (right)

  • The front is a faithful reproduction of the Columbia obi
  • The reverse has been simplified to liner notes and track titles only — the band logo is gone

✔️ Jacket differences

The colour varies across all three.

The Universal pressing (left) is on the lighter side. The 30th Anniversary (centre) is the most vivid. The Nippon Columbia (right) has a slightly matte quality.

The 30th Anniversary is configured to the UK original spec, so the text has that characteristic faded look.

The Universal pressing is the only one of the three with 12 tracks, so Submission appears in the track listing. The wide obi covers it — but slide the obi across and the title comes into view underneath.

✔️ Label differences

All three labels are different.

The Nippon Columbia pressing has its traditional blue label.

The 30th Anniversary uses the gradient label matching the UK original.

✔️ Sound

The resolution is high and the sound opens up well — as you’d hope from an Abbey Road cutting on a new Japan press. No surface noise to speak of, which makes a difference.

That said, for all the fidelity to the original master, I still find the 11-track version rawer and more immediate. Personal preference, but there it is.

🧷 Coming up next

Next time: “Anarchy in Sweden ’77 EP.”

Stay tuned!
