The back inlay features the same artwork as the back of the booklet,
with the track titles and credits printed over it.

Several tracks are also listed under Japanese titles.

▼ The booklet includes liner notes by Tetsuya Higashi (東 徹也), along with song lyrics.

✔️ Obi Strip

This CD was originally issued with a Japanese obi strip, but unfortunately mine is missing.

The obi carries the BEST ARTIST SERIES logo, along with the following rather enthusiastic promotional claim:

“At last! The ultimate, one-of-a-kind, super-powerful best-of album, featuring historic rare recordings by the Sex Pistols, the band that shook the world!!”

A bit over the top, don’t you think? lol

🧷 Collector’s Notes

✔️ Neither Rare Nor the Best

Despite the title The Rare Best, this is essentially No Future UK? (commonly known as SPUNK 2) with one version of “Pretty Vacant” removed and two tracks added from The Original Pistols Live (76 Club): “Substitute” and “Don’t Give Me No Lip Child”.

Both of those albums were also released in Japan by Teichiku, using recordings licensed from Receiver Records.

During the 1990s, albums like these were released by various labels, including Teichiku and Toy’s Factory.

Teichiku in particular seemed to be churning out albums featuring Receiver Records material left, right and centre.

Incidentally, the liner notes incorrectly identify both “Substitute” and “No Lip” as covers of songs by The Who. In fact, “No Lip” was originally recorded by Dave Berry.

…So, a compilation drawn from two of the most familiar Sex Pistols bootlegs. Hardly rare at all!

Still, whenever another one came out, I couldn’t resist buying it. lol
